HISTORY
In the mid
1800’s JAMES BAKER trained in the glass painting
profession. In 1855 he started a firm
specializing in stained glass. After many years
of struggling in the London glass market he
moved his family to America.
In 1863 his
son JAMES WEDLAKE BAKER also entered the stained
glass profession. JAMES WEDLAKE BAKER worked for
several firms and built stained glass windows
for many churches, schools, and buildings all
over New England, New York and New Jersey.
Eventually, JAMES and JAMES WEDLAKE BAKER
started a stained glass business called JAMES
BAKER & SONS.
The Bakers
continued their operations in New York City
until 1888. In 1897 JAMES WEDLAKE BAKER
relocated his family to Denver, CO. A fire
destroyed his business in 1911. Around 1905, his
son RALPH BAKER began his study of art glass.
RALPH BAKER
trained for a year with Louis Tiffany in New
York, and moved to El Paso in 1908. RALPH BAKER
worked for L.W. Hoffecker’s stained glass
studios and El Paso Sash & Door Company. In 1917
RALPH BAKER enlisted in the Army and asked his
father to move to El Paso and run his division
of stained glass at the El Paso Sash & Door
Company. Upon his return, JAMES WEDLAKE and
RALPH BAKER formed a new company called BAKER &
BAKER. |
The company of BAKER &
BAKER produced stained glass windows for many churches,
hotels, and other buildings throughout the southwestern
U.S. and Mexico. In 1936 the bottom fell out of the
stained glass business because of the depression. RALPH
BAKER renamed the company BAKER GLASS and branched out
into the general glass business including auto glass.
In the 1940’s RALPH’S
sons JIMMY and GENE went to work for the company. RALPH
believed in hands on training and therefore his sons
learned art glass as they worked. BAKER GLASS was
incorporated in 1954. BAKER GLASS continued to build and
install stained glass windows until RALPH’S death in
1960.
Currently, BAKER GLASS
is owned and operated by JIMMY’S sons, DAVID and TOM,
and although stained glass is no longer part of their
business, they still do auto glass, mirrors, furniture
tops and glass window replacement.
